A festival for the whole family
The Tänzelfest, held in mid-July, offers valuable insight into the cultural heritage of Kaufbeuren. During this period, residents of the historic former "free-imperial" city recreate life in the 15th century through an extensive week-long celebration. The annual event features more than 1,850 children portraying the town's history, creating a memorable experience that engages both the local community and visitors.
A Festival with More Than 500 Years of History
The energy of participating children fills the historic old town with excitement during this festival. Although the exact age of the event is unknown, it is recognised as Bavaria's oldest children's festival. The celebration centers on one of Emperor Maximilian’s (1459-1519) many visits to Kaufbeuren. Watch as he parades through festively adorned streets alongside his splendid entourage, heading to the town hall where officials and guild members give him a ceremonial welcome. The procession features 36 floats, more than 170 horses, and 1850 children dressed in period costumes, showcasing their town's history from the Carolingian era to the Biedermeier period.
